View Symposium Programme

The Symposium will be held on Wednesday 18 May. Provision is made for registration for the Symposium and/or the Workshops only. This will also give such delegates an opportunity of also visiting the Exhibition.

Many countries in Africa and other developing countries still require major water resources development for both water supply and energy and this theme of the Symposium has accordingly been selected. The title for the Symposium is “Appropriate Technology to Ensure Proper Development, Operation and Maintenance of Dams in Developing Countries”.

All papers and presentations will be in English. One of the Symposium venues will be equipped with simultaneous interpretation from English to French. In this venue presentation may be made in French.

Symposium Themes

  1. Social and environmental impacts and mitigation measures;
  2. Advances in the rehabilitation of dams and appurtenant works to extend their service life including the following:
                a. Improving spillway capacity and flood hydrology determination;
                b. Structural improvements to mitigate the effects of alkali aggregate reaction, internal 
                    erosion potential, foundation failure;
  3. Innovative river basin management including the optimisation of the operation of dams;
  4. Reservoir sedimentation and management;
  5. The state of the art of the tailings dams for their complete lifespan;
  6. Strategies for proper surveillance of dams;
  7. Sustainable hydropower development in developing countries;

Guidelines and templates for the Abstracts, Papers and Presentations will be on the website under the tab entitled Abstract and Paper Management. 
Abstracts do not have to be submitted via your National Committee and may be submitted directly. It is, however, recommended that you notify your National Committee of the proposed paper as a matter of courtesy.

— The Symposium Proceedings will be distributed in electronic format to each ICOLD 2016 delegate. The Proceedings will include all papers accepted from the Call for Papers, including those presented during the Technical Sessions and the Poster Sessions, as well as those not selected for presentation. The Proceedings will include more than 400 papers.
