Exploring dam safety initiatives in Algeria through four diverse case studies.

Peter is a civil engineer with some 40 years’ experience in the planning, design and construction of major water projects, with a particular passion for dams. Peter obtained his civil engineering degree in 1980 from the University of Stellenbosch. He is a registered Professional Engineer with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) and a member of the South African Institution of Civil Engineering (SAICE).
His role is currently Water Specialist at Zutari, where is primarily focussed on major projects. He started his career with the Department of Water Affairs, initially on the construction of the Kogelberg and Rockview dams, and after gaining planning and design experience, moved to Ninham Shand, one of Zutari’s legacy firms, in 1988. He has since fulfilled technical and project management roles on dam and bulk water supply projects in Algeria, Angola Australia, Botswana, Burundi, Lesotho, Mauritius, Mozambique, Nigeria and Eswatini, the highlight being three years spent on the construction of the 185 m high Katse Dam. These include various dam safety assignments. He is also a member of Zutari’s Project Risk Committee.
